Have you checked the rotor dust cover/shield? If a piece of it is touching the rotor it makes an annoying whine/squeal. Ive bent mine wheeling, playing in the snow, jacking it up and what not. Might be worth checking out?

Put your front axle on jack stands and see if you can push or pull the wheel !!!! Sounds like early stage bearing failure.....the earlier you catch it the easier they are to change and less damage can occur

In the knuckle on the ds is a ball and socket that keeps the knuckle centered. On the side of the ball should be a little funky looking zerk. You buy a cv joint grease fitting (big *** needle) at parts store for $5 and stab it in there and grease it up.
If you have driven on it for a long time you may have distorted the ball/socket and may need a new ds.

You wont really be able to tell by looking at it. If it had vibes it could be bad. If the lobes of the knuckles rubbed on each other and left wear marks it could be bad. I "rebuilt" the one in my yj, 6 ujoints later it was the same as before I started because the cv ball sits on a stud that is part of the ds itself and I couldnt change that stud. Not to say you couldn't do it but it would be easier to buy a new one. Search driveshaft cv joint rebuild and it should show the components of the cv joint.
Id just grease it and see how it is. Its probably fine I'm just a worst case scenario kinda guy lol.

Your gears in the diff are still spinning. Theyre just freely rotating because your 4wd isn't engaged. Everything still spins in there when driving in 2wd, just not under power from the transfer case until you engage the 4wd. Think of it as your front axle is in neutral "coasting" Let me know if you want some help. I can come over and take a look or youre welcome to bring it over and use my garage.

also, there are three xj's at our local junk yard. I haven't checked the drivelines yet but i KNOW at least one of them will have a front driveshaft you can probably pick up for cheap.
