I drove my Jeep out to Walker to do a little Recon of the area before my Big Bad Birthday Bash Run. It also served as a good test run of my Jeep as I hadn't driven it since The Elbe Campout back on the first weekend in May. I need to replace my water pump as the bearings are chattering and howling like a scalded Jackelope. I also either need to fill the transfercase or one of the diffs. Something with gears on gears is really howling too. Something is hokey with my front suspension, too. I'm getting too much side to side movement when moving the steering. I also found out that my onboard air pump isnt putting out any air. So, I need to fix those 4 things. Then, I will be ready to tackle Walker.

It sure is amazing what you can accomplish in an hour when you are the builder of your own Jeep and it has a few post wheeling trip ailments. The steering problem was pretty elementery. The Trac Bar frame mount all 4 bolts attaching it to the frame were loose. Also the bolt where the Trac Bar attaches to the axle mount was loose. Tightening all of those up fixed the slop in the steering. The water pump bearings are definitely shot. Sucks because it is still pumping water just fine and keeping things cool. I did the old put a metal rod on the pump and the other end to my ear trick. I checked all of the other pulleys as well. The water pump bearings were definitely squealing louder than the rest. The kicker was when I shut the engine off and grabbed the water pump pulley and was able to move it and quarter of an inch in and out. I will be picking a new water pump up at Autozone tomorrow. The transfercase was a half quart low on fluid so hopefully that fixes my howling problem. While I was looking at the TC I noticed my speedo sender was loose. Thats probably what has been causing the speedo to intermitently quit working. So I tightened that up. I also noticed the pinion seal on the rear diff is leaking like a siv. that may be another source of howling while at highway speed. I guess I will pick up a pinion seal at Autozone tomorrow as well. I fixed my air pump too. Every one of the bolts holding the thing together were loose. Not sirprising since the thing vibrates like crazy when it's running. Once I tightened it all back up and put teflon tape on the threads of the output fitting she pumps like new. So, Alex it doesn't quite suck so bad to be me. I did take it in the shorts for 4 bucks in quarters the other day when I ran to Walker and I couldn't air back up with my air pump.

I called my local Autozone and in the middle of the day on a Wednesday nobody answered the phone. Sucks for them. They lost that sale.
I called up Parts Plus and they had my rear pinion seal in stock and They will have my new water pump in the morning. Looks like I will get the pinion seal swapped out tonight and get the old water pump pulled out and the area all cleaned up. then I will pick the water pump up and get it swapped out tomorrow.
