Default talked about this now doing it

so my xj is a wheeler. wheelers need maps. and how many of us have speedos that read way off. i know mine does .

so i am fitting and hard wiring a gps into my dash pod and removing my speedo. i can rest the trip for mileage and oil changes . it shows speed i can also make way point maps off this and up date it wireless thru the Garmin site. it auto dims at nite and will still give turn by turn directions if needed .

here is the start

That's cool man I like it! Did you say it shows your current speed? You should lay some ABS plastic over the mph slot and custom fit the gps in there!

unit will be hard wired to truck. so it should never go dead and you will always have a fairly accurate speedo. this one has consistently been with in 1-2 mph +/- that's pretty good tolerance

it will show speed. and your world location in gps coordinates , can also map on the fly and show you ware you have been. can also set trip way points and mark spots on the map and input info about that area.

Thats a pretty neat idea with the GPS. I just hope you get your Jeeps cab to seal up allright. Winter wheeling is just around the corner.

I know it seems like i have time but winter always comes sooner than you think. I am working on building the back if tge cab right now then its rolls bars tied into a cage. So i still got some work to do. Its really just getting the materials. $$$ is the deal. I only have like 4hrs tied up in my cab right now. And most of it was texting on my phone.

I was pondering deleting the factory tach and mou.ting one in the pod cover like the gps. Making another delet plate and keeping the wires out if site. Was thinking a indiglow tach like auto meter. Would make the whole project look well rounded. And the factoy temp fuel voltage and oil gauge would still be easy to see.

so my dash lights dont work not since i have this heep of mine.

so i added 2 led housings with 3 super white leds in them on each side to light whats left of the factory gauges. if ther too bright i will place a film above them and turn them orange or red.

here is the almost finished proto type. later i plan to build a whole custome dash using all auto meter gauges and a large screen gps. but this is a good representation of my idea.

the next dash will get a low rev tach. from 0-5000 rpm so that the needle sweeps the whole gauge and i plan to match black and grey . the equis unit sands out too much but it will do for now. i may build some of these for anyone interested . will include lighting up grade , gps and a tach, also if a smaller tach gets used i can install a 02 meter as well for you guys with strokers or built 4L

This is a GREAT idea. But I have a 97 cherokee, and my speedo is on point for now so no need to gut out my cluster. Keep up the pictures, I'd like to see how the LED lighting works because I've considered switching all the inside lights over to LED including the lighting on the dash / instruments
