Default Stupid Question of the Day

Our ask a question thread disappeared, so heres a new one.

My question is...

Can I replace the boot clamp on my rear slip yoke with a reg hose clamp or zip tie? I can go buy a new clamp if I have to but Im cheap and would rather use something I have instead.

Heres a pic of the old clamp...

yes use a hose clamp if you want. there is a small possibility of balancing issues but i doubt it. if there is put a second clamp clocked to cancel out and balance the first clamp

A zip tie will also work.

hey all been awhile. here is my stupid question. can you do a compression test on a engine that is not installed ?

i got a engine from best auto parts in lynnwood for 520. i had intent on dropping it off to be gone thru and rebuilt. but this engine looks damn near new. so i was thinking i may just swap this one in and have my other rebuilt. it looks way to good to be true. what other things should i look at or should i take to someone and have them look at it ? thanks all

I think as long as you add a little oil to the cylinder compresion testing it cold will work fine. Maybe not a 100% accurate but should be a good ballpark number. I think most places offer a short warranty for used engines??

Tom! Buddy! where have you been keeping yourself? Wow, this is a tough one. As long as you could find a secure enough place to set the motor and you have a battery, some cables and a remote starter switch. You should be able to do a compression test with the motor outside of a vehicle. Cranking it over enough times to actually get a reading on the gauge without it getting away from you would be my worry.

Wade, the only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. I would bet that a zip tie would work but, I would go with the hose clamp just so I could get it tighter so i know it's not going anywhere...and I bet you wouldn't even feel a balancing issue except maybe a very minor vibe at highway speed if you feel anything at all.

Will a scout (dont remember year, pretty sure its a d side drop) front d44 fit in a xj? As in same width or close to a d30? My father in law has a set of f/r d44s and I'm considering replacing my d30 instead of trussing it etc. There an hour or so away so I can't just go measure them. Thanks

There are 0 bolt on D44s for the front of an xj, every one has to be modified. The closest is a wagoneer d44, all you really have to do is cut the leaf perches and put on coil buckets i believe. Also a different lug pattern and a tad wider.

I wish there was one that didnt require mods!!

Incorect. The 05-06 rubicon wranglers d44 fronts bolt right in. But people are proud of them. They are hard to find and people want $1800-$2500
