i am into doing some engine work on my xj to keep it running while i save up for my engine swap.
i decided to go high compression on the factory bore with a renix head & H.O manifolds and a lager TB . i'm shaving my block and head down and using a thinner head gasket. that combo with some tunning will yield around300fltbs down low around 2000rpm. high comp and small ports will build a lot of low end torque. also i went this route because i still use all factory parts and all i have changed is my clearances in my chamber and its CHEAP
. now if you wanna rev your rig out i'd say use a h.o head and if you think you'll need over 300fltbs then your after a stroker for sure.

i took a 4.0l high out put that blew the head gasket because of a clogged cat. i shaved the head like 20 thou, and put a fel pro head gasket on it, it would ping on 87 octance but if you ran 92 octane in it, with it timed right it would run like a raped ape. in a wrangler with brand new 30in bfg all terrians, with a auto trans if you would stop the gas it would spin you around like a top on dry pavement.
If you "deck" your block and go for a higher compression you will have to run premium gas. If you use the Keith Black pistons and pass on the "decking" you should be able to run regular gas. The difference you might feel, but you will always feel the difference in your wallet when you go to the pumps. IMO very much not worth it. Your motor will last longer
