I've never really heard of a D30 axle failing, though... D35s, yes, but only under extreme duress, which any axle will do... but never a D30... they don't really see that much stress on the front end of an XJ.

running 35's? locked D30 shafts and U's break all day under a heavy foot
$500 isn't exactly a steal. I'd rather rock stock shafts as opposed to risking an RP or locker breaking becasue the 4340's are stronger

I want to say that stock gears might have something to do with that there OD...
I'm not quite positive but in my head it works like more torquie = more breakage

well, on the last two trips i have broken 2 driverside shafts and 1 passenger. I wasnt even wheeling it hard either time. I didnt have any problems on 33s and open.
Now im locked on 35s they snap like twigs. So if you want to be the one to hold up the group every trip once or twice, by all means stay with stock shafts, the amount of money u buy in spares will pay for your chromos in 3-4 trips.
I dont upgrade my stuff because i think its fun to throw money at my jeep. just sayin

Second, I believe it does have something to do with it. With higher gears you are putting down less torque to the wheels (read: twisting force) so the engine does not have as much leverage on them than with lower gears. I've also heard people complain about more axle breakage after installing doublers or crawl boxes. Hmmm I wonder why?
You're not alone in your thinking atmos

Well I just bought a Dana 30 high pinion with auburn ected locker and 4:88's and a xj Dana 44 with a spool and 4:88's for 800.00$. I'll be running 35's with em the Dana 30 also has chromoly shafts not sure about the 44. I plan on going all out with these because my jeep won't be a dd anymore. We will see if I can break some axels.

So far 33s have been the magic number for me. I'm locked front and rear with 4.56 gears and stock shafts all the way around. I drive my Jeep like I stole it and so far, no breakage. Just want that little bit more ground clearance I'd get from 35s or 36s. I guess the real experimenting will happen at that point.
