I read the write up about the zj alternator into a renix cherokee but have a problem. I have tried 3 alternators with the same problem. Not cranking enouhg voltage. I guess its the regulator, but its brand new. I will try to find a new one (again) and install it when it gets back from paint. Any opinions or suggestions? I disconnected the regulator and it the voltage either stayed the same or lowered

perhaps you could post a picture of how you have it set up, wiring and belt routing.

The write up has two different pulley's, which one did you use? Can you state what the output voltage at idle is, and at, say 2000 RPM?
That might help others to isolate the problem.

You checked your new belt is properly installed I would guess.

What is the voltage at 1500rpms and 3000rpms

" I disconnected the regulator and it the voltage either stayed the same or lowered"
Can you explain some more on this one?

I'm leaning towards a faulty regulator as you said you've tried 3 different alternators.

Hoping some others here will post some opinions also.

one alternator seems to charge a bit more than the others but no clue to what is going on. the belt was properly installed. the voltage is never stable at any rpm. jumps between 13.5 and 12.5 eradicly
