Yj shocks on an xj

I tried this on the cherokee chat but didn't get anywhere and since it has to do with the stock height and all stock parts on it now i thought it might be acceptable in this thread:
So my father is about to install his 4" RC lift on his YJ and he has very good monroe sensa trac shocks on his yj now. I need new shocks and from what he said depending on how well I do my second semester in college I may get a 4" lift myself. Know in the mean time or if for some reason I don't get a lift will his YJ shocks work for my XJ? I've read multiple things from yes, no, yes if you change the bushings, and only unless it's lifted around 3"s. So can someone please give me a straight clear answer here!
P.S. This is my DD with minor mudding and have never tested out my flex
