Default Is Yellow Antifreeze ok for XJ?

It's getting harder and harder to find a high-quality source of old-fashioned green antifreeze. Is it ok to use yellow? I know the pink Dex-Cool isn't a good idea, but what about the Prestone yellow?

I have a '91 XJ with 4.0L HO, and CSF 3-row radiator. Thanks.

I run straight Peak and mix it myself. Usually $10 a gallon and when I mix it I get 1.75 to 2 gallons, compared to the pre-mix stuff. Its a yellowie-chartreuse color. And depending on if youre color deficient (aka color blind) greens and yellows will look like different shades/colors to different people.

Any anti-freeze from Prestone is good stuff.

Like this? Antifreeze/coolant is kinda like motor oil, the new stuff is better than the old.

So you're saying it's ok to buy the Prestone Yellow "Extended Life" Anti-freeze and run that in the XJ 4.0? I know that the Pink Dex-cool stuff is a definite no.

Im pretty sure any yellow/green coolant is fine. Im pretty sure any Ethylene Glycol coolant is fine in our Jeep, and thats what they call for.

Dexcool (Orange) use to be made with propylene glycol and was not compatable with Ethylene Glycol coolant. This was pre 1997 Dexcool. Now like most all long life coolants it also is Ethylene Glycol based.

Any long life coolant, be it gold, yellow, orange, pink, green, will work in your Jeep. Just make sure its Ethylene Glycol based as most stores carry.

At my work we use only Global Long Life Coolant. It's light yellow and almost clear when mixed 50/50.

I worked on a fairly new Ford the other day that had BLUE coolant!
Toyota's coolant has been Red for a long time.
VW/Audi uses Pink, orange, and blue.
And they make pink, yellow and blue washer fluid.
So much for standards

I purchased the Wal mart stuff and noticed it was a VERY light colored yellow. When mixed its almost a clear color. Its not like the old stuff either. It has more of a chemical smell as opposed to the old stuff that had a sweet smell.

So much for "smelling" when your vehicle is overheating.

This has been coming about for a while. Here in Maine we passed a law to not sell the sweet smelling/tasting coolant because of pets & kids getting sick and dying from it. We didnt make it "law" until our neighboring states caught up, so people wouldnt be running to other states buying the other stuff. Personally, I think this should have been done YEARS ago. My cousin killed his grandmothers dog (it was 5 or 6 and she got it shortly after her husband died) when he parked his leaking car in her driveway and didnt clean up the puddle. The government should have put a flat out ban on the sweet stuff years ago. No reason it should smell or taste good.

Im as anti-government as it gets. But when you have a deadly poison that smells and tastes great and is in every vehicle thats on the road, there is a problem.

We don't need bans and nanny state laws to protect us from our selves. Why not make it illegal to be a dumba$$? The jails would be over flowing with idiots. Let Darwin do his job and make the human race stronger.

So a poison that smells and tastes good to kids and animals, that can leak out of vehicles is a good thing? Youll never convince me when adding a chemical to it that makes it smell and taste bad is so simple.

Honestly motor oil is sweet too.
Kinda reminds me of when they started putting sulfur in nitrous oxide. No more hippy crack.
