Can anyone tell me what this is/ is used for? And possibly identify this plug in?

Can you pull it out, and then take out the vaccum canister without any problems? My cruise control doesn't work as it is, and I don't really feel like I need it/ don't feel like finding out whats wrong with it.
On each side of your instrument panel down low, you should see some little grills that a speaker could mount to. If you see those, check to see if you have spakers on the underside. If not, that is the plug for your OEM speakers (I do believe).

Its a cruise control box. Yes you can remove it without problems. No you cant remove your vacuum cannister(the one behind the bumper) without problems. If you remove the cruise control unit from under the hood remember to also plug the vacuum line that attaches to it.
The picture of the plug is not great, but the plug looks like it might have been for the under dash lights that were on some models. In the AMC era, there was one wiring harness for all XJ's. So all the extra wiring needed for a limited was under the dash even if you had a stripped out manual tranny base model.

You will have the larger dual-resivoir style when you have cruise control. But vacuum controls both the heater valve that lets the hot water into the heater core AND the blend doors inside the heater box. You have vacuum leaks and one of the first symptoms is that your heater won't blow air anywhere but on the windshield.
Also the engine has some vacuum requirements to run correctly, the fuel pressure regulator has a vacuum line attached. The vacuum disconnect for the front axle is also connected to the system.
