do you not have another battery kicking around that you can throw in to try? maybe borrow someone's?

i am very sure it's the battery or cables.

Yay!

But as you can see, one problem can domino effect into several more.

If you ever can, you need to replace your cables with ones that have factory-sealed ends. That will prevent corrosion problems like you just experienced.

The aftermarket "repair" ends should only be used temporarily. They are not really a fix.

I'm glad it wasn't the starter. This time. You mentioned a lot of oil on the engine. I found out that that can cause starter failure.

use a wire brush and clean that rust/corrosion off the battery clamp. then spray them with hairspray (yup, that's right). this will prevent a build up of corrosion. or you can use those felt donuts on the posts.

spray both clamps once you get them tightened back on.

Don't know what to do about the oil build up, perhaps degreaser but I'm thinking I should just leave it alone. I'm learning, "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" As for the cables, I agree. Bucket list: check. I'm
going to get some covers for the terminals ASAP.
