You might as well put a 9" in it. I have put a 8.8 and a 9" in my XJ. They both pretty much require same amount of work.

except the 8.8 is very close to stock width and is the same bolt pattern as the D30.

Right, but if your going to drop a 350 in there, you are going to want to upgrade the front axle...that will be a little much for the D30. If just doing a stroker, then the 8.8 is perfect.
