XJ transmission conversion....info needed
Hi all,
I would like to know if anyone here knows a shop that can convert an automatic trans to a manual trans in a 2000 or 2001 Cherokee?
Thanks
Response 7/7/08 - thanks for the replies. I currently have a 97 Cherokee 4x4, 4.0 L with a 5 speed that has 198,000 miles on it. I am still on the ORIGINAL factory clutch!! Clutches will last forever if they are driven properly. Here is proof.
It is time to retire this Cherokee as I am encountering many problems.
I hate automatics. Haven't owned a car with an auto since 1984. It is difficult to find a used Cherokee with a manual these days, so my other option is to get an auto and convert it over.
I know it would be pricey, but the alternative is buying a new patriot or liberty...and I am not sold on those....a little on the junky side for my taste.
So if any of you know a shop that will do this, please let me know.

almost need a donor vehicle so you can swap the pedal assembly, slave cylinder, and trans. I once did this to an F-350 never tried a Jeep. The Jeep auto seems more reliable me, AW4's have proven fairly bulletproof where the manuals aren't. Standard shifts are fun to drive though

Your best be would be to get the after market AW4 shift setup, lets you have the best of both worlds auto and manual. Here's the link for you.. http://awshifting.com/controller.htm

I dont think its worth it for the amount of time you would need to put in, especially if you want to have a shop do it, you may aswell buy another jeep.
IMO the aw4 is a very good tranny for our XJ's. Remember a torque converter is stronger then a clutch.

As others have already said the AW4 is bulletproof and the manuals are expensive and require a new clutch every couple of years if you wheel them. In a off road situation the auto is much better of a trans to have and much easier to maintain. TCU and ECU are integrated on the later years too so it means another item to change.
