Default XJ stuck in 4x4

Just going to say this now, my XJ is a DD. So the one day on the way to school my almost bald tires were spinning out on the really wet road, I decided to shift into 4 hi on the fly (99% sure this is OK in a '98 XJ sport). After I went up the road a bit more I decided to go back to 2x4, but my jeep didn't. I shifted into 2 (on the fly again) but my jeep stayed in 4 for a good mile or so until I got into town and I felt it kick out of 4. Something is telling me it is either because I didn't stop, put it in N and then throw it in 4hi...or there might be something blocking my vacuum line a little. Can somebody please help? Thanks in advance!

mine dose this sometimes. from what I have found threw google searched is that the return spring in the T/C gets weak and the sleeve wont pop out of 4x4 until you reach a speed or reverse to help it pop out of 4x4. I am interested as well how to "fix" this or if it is worth my time lol.

Could it may have been because the 4x4 wasn't used in a long time. The last owner of my XJ was a preppy girl in college (I doubt she used it off-road) and the area she lived in isn't covered in snow very often.

When it happens to me I put it in 4lo then all the way into 2WD. I have to remember to adjust the linkage on the bottom next time I crawl under the Jeep

I've never had it with my other XJ, just this one. And I only put it in 4x4 once (ever since it got stuck, I'm afraid it will get stuck for a lot longer than a little over a mile) It may have just been because the 4wd was never used (or so I'm guessing) so it could just have been a once and done thing, I'll try it again............someday
