Default XJ Steering wheel removal HELP!!

Hey guys i was just curious how to remove the steering wheel. I have a 91XJ no airbag style wheel. I took the center nut off and it didnt budge. Is it splined on there? Or do i need a puller to remove it? Any help is always appreiciated. Thanks in advance!

A puller would make it easier, but you can get them off without one. They are splined. What I do is spin the nut almost all the way off, then grab the wheel at 9:00 and 3:00 and pull alternating right arm, left arm, right arm, left arm until it pops off. You want the nut engaged on a couple of threads so the wheel doesn't smack you in the face when it comes off.

When you reinstall it, put a little antisieze on the splines and that will make it easier to remove next time.

you can rent a steering wheel puller for about 20 from autozone, its just a deposit and they give it back when you return the tool, undamaged.

if not, there is another way...
Its tried and true method, i did it last saturday at the jy, to get me a new steering wheel.

Spin the nut to the top until its flush. Take a hammer and beat on it till it "pops" loose, it will go down slightly. Then grab it and start yanking. Dont forget to pull the nut off the rest of the way at that point.

Buying one is great, but unless you plan on removing a steering wheel once a month, its kind of pointless.
Why not just rent one and get your money back when your done with it.

I have R&R'd hundreds of steering wheels and never had to "beat on" anything to remove one. That sounds like a good way to destroy steering column internals, but to each his own I guess.

I got my wheel puller from Harbor Freight and it included a lock plate tool. Makes life so much easier.
