Default Xj starts but wont keep running

My buddy Xj wont stay running. He thought it was the fuel pump so he put new one in. Not that. Sence then he changed, map, crank, fuel regulator everything except for the baslist resister .Could it be that? Any thoughts would help thanks

I would start by checking the fuel pressure at the fuel rail with a mechanical gauge also make sure it has a good strong blue spark.

Bypass the ballast resistor and see if it fixes the problem.

If the engine starts but dies a few seconds after releasing the key back to the on position, then yes......the ballast resistor can be the cause.

A simple jumpering of that resistor with a wire will tell the story if it is the cause or not. Jumpering is not an issue as the resistor is only there to reduce noise on the fuel pump circuit. Later models don't even have the ballast resistor.
