Exclamation Xj on the side of the road

I have followed many threads with a similar problem but have not found a solution. No one seems to follow them through. I am going to go to my local transmission shop for a diagnosis this week. However, do not have the bucks to put in a rebuilt one at this time.

PROBLEM
There is a distinct noise coming from the bell housing area? 99 Cherokee XJ 4.0.

WHAT HAPPENED
Transmission cooler line broke. Dumped 8 qts of dex on the pavement while traveling to town. Didn't notice until the rpm's ran up and I was going nowhere fast.

ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD
Repaired the line. Dumped in 8 quarts. I think the system takes 8.5. It runs great <NO SLIPPING> but I have this noise after it warms up. Fluid does not smell burnt. The noise sorts wirrrrrss when I rev the engine.

DIAGNOSIS?
<I am guessing the pump or something in the transmission?> <does the torQue converter ever make noise?? I took off the bell housing inspection plate and the flex plate and bolts were solid. Any suggestions?

Here is the noise. The embeded you tube worked in my preview ?

Try this:

Hmm.. whatever it is, it doesnt sound good. I would spend the money and have a trans shop look at it. Your torque converter might not be full yet, but I doubt it (dont know a whole lot about transmissions)..
Heres your video:

I did look at the flex plate. I did not see any cracks and the bolts looked tight. Since this just started after "sudden fluid loss" it must be something related. The noise sounds more distinct in person.

I do plan on at least a transmission shop diagnosis. We have a good junk yard here too so I can either have it rebuilt or visit Dick at the yard. (again)

Spent the morning at the transmission shop. Turns out it is either the torque converter or the pump making the noise. It will only get worse before it dies. To have either one replaced is $1400. (parts and labor) When finished you do not know what else might have been damaged so to go to a rebuild it would run $2200.

I am going to the the junque yard and purchase a $400 transmission.

Anyone ever try http://www.car-part.com/ ?

This is what the guy at your junk yard uses. You can also see how far you have to drive to get a good deal. Just enter your zip and go.

yea car-parts.com is pretty good , i work in a body shop i use them to locate parts , just make sure you call and get a better price , most stuff is marked up because alot of insurance companies go thru them as well and insurance companies pay whatever the list is

For the most part the AW4 is bulletprooof as long as you keep fluid in it. There is no way I would pay the trans shop that kinda of money for a repaired aw4. Heck you could buy a brand new NV4500 new with all new adapters.

Followup to bad noise coming from transmission area.

That noise heard on the video above is the oil pump in the front of the transmission. It is heard after the things warms up.

Shopped around and found a transmission with 6ok miles for $75. We spread the swap out over a week or two but it would only take one day if you stuck with it.

It is actually running smoother than ever. The aw4 transmission is one of the best transmissions you can get if you keep the oil in it.
