Default XJ Over fueling issue and off the scale emissions

Hi,

My 2000 XJ 4.0L has just failed its UK MOT test for very high emissions due to over fueling.

History is I changed the TPS after it failed 5 weeks ago and since then it has run OK but was very poor when hot starting. Also noticed that the engine temperature gauge is not working.

Any advice on things I can check before I decide to take it to the shop I would appreciate it.

Many thanks

Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor, located on the thermostat housing.

A defective ECT will cause fuel metering issues. The ECT provides the temp gauge with readout info and provides the PCM with coolant temp info for fuel metering management.

Edit: Examine the wiring at the ECT Sensor for damage, and with its connector unplugged, examine the pin cavities for corrosion.

Many thanks once again sound like a new ECT would be a simple and cheap fix.

Cheers

Hard starting could be leaky injector, would make it run rich at first too

Default All working

Thanks guys for the advice, problem was the ECT once replaced all working just fine and the hot start issue has gone. Emissions are now back at the right level.

Many thanks
