Do you have any CEL codes?

No CEL codes. I thought that maybe I fried it as well but all gauges and lights work where I have read if its fried some gauges wont work.

I will try the CPS tomorrow and see if that does it. I did read tonight that sometimes they check good but are failed.

The rather disturbing thought occurred to me - if the mechanical sound when it went wonky was, in fact, starter engagement. You could have a perfectly good CPS trying to monitor a damaged flywheel.
IIRC the bottom plate on the bellhousing on the auto can be removed pretty easily. It might be worth checking out the flywheel for damage.

The flywheel looked good when I had the starter out. No signs of any grinding or chewing.

That's good.

I'm always suspicious when seemingly unrelated things seem to be wrong. You had an issue with the ignition/starting.. then suddenly you might have a bad CPS -- someone smarter than I might know better, but I can't fathom how the problems you had could -cause- the CPS to fail.. it doesn't seem logical. (especially if it seemed to test OK..)
Now if you blew the computer, that would make sense that the ignition stuff routes through the computer and the spark stuff routes through the computer. However that's a pain since it's not exactly easy to verify the computer with common test tools and it's a pain to find a matching computer and too expensive to just swap it out to see if it fixes the problem.
I'm not familiar with it myself, but maybe there are tests you can do on the isolated systems/functions that could be related.
