Angry xj mystery problem

ok i will try and explain this as best i can, this is a starting problem it allways cranks over fine, but i have to cycle the key forward and back to get the service engine light and the fuel pump to kick on, only then can i start the vehicle, i replaced ignition switch, checked connectors, looked for grounds, ran a jumper from the fuel pump porcilan ballast resistor wires, no luck any suggestions or do i just need to start looking for a small block with a carb lol?

You may have a bad relay somewhere...chasing wires isn't my favorite thing to do, that's for sure. lol

It sounds like that is EXACTLY what he is going to need to do....lol....no fan of that here either.

There is one other thing I would check though....

I'm not sure if your 93 has the same setup as my 90 as far as the switch goes, but have you made sure that the ignition switch is properly adjusted? Shot in the dark...

I know the steering column in mine is the same that GM used in a lot of their early stuff, and I know from expierence that those ignition switches slipping down the column can cause some weird no start/hard start issues...brand new parts from a store can always still be bad too...

I certainly wouldn't spend all the cash to drop a carbed motor in it...I'm sure when u figure it out, it'll be one of those "duh" moments. Been there many times.

I'll definately keep my eye on this one...I'm intruiged.

If cycling through the on-off sequence seems to do the trick, maybe check the NSS or park-position switch (I'd recheck the ign-switch). Try tapping (well banging) on the shifter instead of cycling through on-off. . .

Also, you mentioned a SES light and trying to engage the fuel pump. . . Two stupid questions, have you found out the dtc of the SES light?? And do you hear the fuel pump prime itself each time?

Default Don't know if this will help, but here goes.

I do not know if your ignition control setup is any thing like the one on the 2001 . But if your fuel gauge and volt gauge do not move when the key is in the run position you may not be getting power to the auto shut down relay. If this is the case if could be a crankshaft position sensor. However if those gauges are operating then it may be the dreaded NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH. Like I said I don't know if this will be helpful as we have different year jeeps. ( But I am fairly certain that all fuel injected vehicles have a shut down relay.

I don't see why running it on a toggle would hurt. Just don't forget to turn it off when you shut the vehicle off lol.
