Okay - maybe if I can get the console off and look in there, it will all make sense.

Just had a new radio installed, and I'm missing the two bolts that hold in the aftermarket radio kit. I doubt it, but does anyone know the size of those bolts?

I have a 70 dodge dart that I restored, and I happened upon a list that shows every OEM bolt size that my car has. Does anyone know if such a convenience exists in the depths of the internet? It would be an immense help.

Hi.
Need expert advice on diff locks.
I'm thinking of buying a Detroit Locker 27 spline 3.73 gear ratio for my 1997 XJ.
I've been told my front axle is Dana 30. It didn't had any modifications, and I don't know anything about gear ratios or splines.
How can I be 100% it would fit, other than opening and count splines?
Which diff lock would you recommend, automatic or limited slip, considering driving on road as well, for short distances?

All XJs shipped with Dana 30s, all of which are 27-spline.

That the locker you're looking at specifies 3.73:1, I'm guessing it's a full-carrier replacement. The carrier size doesn't matter to an automatic lunchbox unit. If your XJ is stock, it came with one of a few gear ratios. Depends on the engine and transmission. The real way to check is to pop open the cover and count teeth, however.

What transfer case does your XJ have and what sort of wheeling vs on-road driving are we talking about here? Also what sort of budget? An automatic lunchbox is an order of magnitude less expensive than a selectable... but you can't use them with Full Time 4WD or expect it to work well on ice.

It's a 4.0 high output. Everything is standard apart from suspension.
I'm doing hill climbing and muddy trails and often get stuck because of the open diffs. On road for petrol and to get to the mud, approx 2 miles at 20-30 MPH but that is on 2WD.
I would prefer automatic diff locks as I wouldn't have to worry about the terrain in front or stop to engage.
What do you mean you can't use them with Full Time 4wd?
Can only be used in 4wd Low Range?

I was looking at this one

Found this thread about transfer cases. This what I've got:

NP242: "Selec-Trac", Full or Part-time, 2.72:1 ratio low
Pattern: 2HI - 4HI (P/T) - 4HI (F/T) - N - 4LO
The NP242 has an aluminum case and it should have a tag on the back saying New Process Gear, Model 242. New versions of the NP242 are refered to as NVG242 or NV242 which stands for New Venture Gear. The tag on the back of the transfer case will reflect the name change. Only the name is different.

The chain driven NP242 is a full time transfer case with a 48/52 torque split front and rear. It is possible to lock it into four low so it behaves like a part-time transfer case. When it is locked in, power will be split regardless of traction. The output for the front axle is on the drivers side. Low range is 2.72 and high is 1.00.

Usage
The NP242 is used in Grand Cherokees (ZJ) and Cherokees (XJ).

1999 XJ
Front Driver window motor got slower and slower over the past 6 months.

One day it stopped responding. I just checked and there is 13V supply when the switch is actuated (up and down).

Does this confirm I need a new regulator/motor assembly?
If so, opinions on Dorman, ACDelco, or sourcing an OEM?

Thanks guys.

Always a possibility. Have you tried taking the door panel off and greasing all the joints and bushings? They slow down over time as they get gunked up.

No transmission eh?

Not that it matters in this case - none of the combinations that included the 4.0L were offered with gears other than 3.07:1 (5-speed manual) or 3.55:1 (4-speed automatic). The product you linked will not fit.

Right. So the basic Detroit Locker is not fancy. It sounds like you'd be fine with an automatic locker for what you do off the road. The differential feature of the NP242 is incompatible with any automatic locker, so if you do go with an auto locker the 4WD Full Time position on the lever basically won't do anything other than 4WD Part Time... except if you sink a rear tire, the entire Jeep will be stuck lol

This is a splined shaft:

Splines are used to affix things onto shafts that turn. As you can imagine, there are quite a few of these in a 4WD vehicle. Can you please be more specific?

Just bought my first XJ (1996) the other day. It is throwing the random misfire code and 1-6 misfire codes but runs perfectly fine and CEL doesn't blink. (I knew this when I bought it). Sound like a distributor?

So the bottom line is that I need to look at transfer case and ratios before I buy a diff lock?
What other options I have for diff locks, with stock transmission?
