I just took my xj in for a recall on the cat that was rattling, they didn't replace it just reflashed it and said come back if the check engine light comes on and they'll replace it. Is this normal or am I getting the run around?

And if so, how long before the check engine light comes on? It's not on right now, but I just got back.

I just picked up some 784 injectors, used. I am wondering what I need or should do before I install them and where to get the parts. I went to Autozone to see if they had a rebuild kit, and they do not. Thanks!

Sounds normal, I always reset my codes and wait for the problem to arise again before I start looking into things, sometimes stuff just happens.

Bout 20-100 miles if its an intermittent problem, if its a recurring problem probably less than 50 miles.

Any other quick diagnosis tips I can use to figure out what the h the horrible noise coming from the engine is? I dumped the oil and saw no metal chunks, dropped the serp belt and everything seems decently good. I'm going to replace the idler pulley and serp belt since it needs to be done anyway. I was going to do the harmonic balancer as well since they're all 165k old. Flexplate looks good still, not sure what else to do without just throwing money at it. I figure these 3 things cost <$100 and can be chalked upto maintenance if it doesn't solve it.

1st start up it sounded a little strange, and drove it 25 miles home without any hiccups or noise. 2nd start up it sounded BAD and continued that noise until I turned it off. 3rd start up to video tape it the noise was still there. Noise continues through the engine running until I turn it off.

I'm going to hook up a trans temp sensor this week, I need to connect the auto meter gauge to the ignition switch or some other 12v switched power source. Which wire should I tap in to closest to the a pillar?

Woops forgot to mention. It's great. 25ish at hot idle, 50ish at highway speeds. Drained the oil, no metal in it. Took the serp belt off, and the noise was way reduced it seemed. But there was just so much less noise in general too. Definitey less scratching, I can just hear my piston slap or whatever rod knock I typically have that hasn't changed at all.

Might need to turn your key backwards. My '99 has an actual lock position.

Wobbling could be loose steering gear, TRE, or steering shaft U joint

Everyone I've seen undertake this endeavour has ordered kits off of eBay with the pintle caps and filters. At the absolute bear minimim you need to flush the injectors clean and make sure the resistance of their coils are within spec. Should measure approx 10-12 ohms for each injector.

There are some decent injector videos on YouTube if you are so inclined

Uh. They reprogrammed the PCM to address a physically rattling cat?

Sounds legit...

(That's sarcasm by the way)

Because that is the way parts store software is written. You will get asked the same question for wiper blades, oil filters, brake lines, and dash light bulbs. There is no difference.

Ah a Benson there too?! Those guys seem to have the best prices on filters. Every WIX unit the clowns at NAPA wanted $60 for, Benson has had at a reasonable price, and in stock.

Remember, PartSource does free wiper blade installation... Lol
