New to Forum and XJs -Compression Question
I recently acquired a 91 XJ 4.0L (manual). It won't start (engine turns, there's spark and fuel, but not catching). After checking the codes and as much of the electrical connections that I could, I ended up taking it to my Jeep dealer for them to look at. Everything is good, including the timing, until we get to compression. No compression in 1, 2, and 3. I've seen articles about blown gaskets causing 2 adjacent cylinders to have low/no compression, but not about 3. I've got a heated garage and a long winter here in Alaska to work on it, but I'm curious if anyone has suggestions/ideas about tearing down the engine. I'll check gasket first, but I suspect problem goes beyond that. I have Chiltons and Haynes, but this will be my first time doing more than just tune-up type work.

I dont see $2600 in a simple rebuild.. You need to get another estimate from somewhere else, it shouldnt be that much. Now did he say boring the block or honing the block? If your doing a complete rebuild you might as well be replacing some parts in the top end as well. If you just have a leak, get the head shaved and replaced the head gasket.. No need to fix something that already works.
Hell for that money there's a brand new 4.0 thats been sitting on craigslist for a while for $750 bucks. Would be worth the money to just drive and get it.

i have gone to 3 shops -
1st said he would charge $5000 for complete rebuild - i said heck no
2nd and 3rd both said around $2600 and that was boring out the block and honing, new watrer pump etc.they both said it would be like buying a jasper crate motor.
i did ask about going to a stroker and none of the shops would do it and said it was a bad idea. they said unless u just HAVE to have the power its not worth what you are sacrificing for reliablity. i also asked all of the shops about just getting a new head gasket and they all would do it for around $1000 but no warranty and they said with 223K on the engine its only a matter of time before something else fails.
i want this jeep to be 100% relaible and 223K miles 4hrs from home does scare me a little - BUT - it does have good compresion and runs great.
