XJ addicts help me with starting problem
Alright so I have a 96 xj 4.0 auto I picked up acouple months ago for the wife. There for awhile every now an then when she went to hop in it it wont turn over at all, I looked at it and found that when I push the shifter forward it starts right up, so my guess is its not telling the ecu that its in park thus not starting, at first she just delt with it but now its getting pretty bad she has to shake the shifter to get it to start now, so I was wondering if there's anyway to adjust it? And how you'd go about doing that, not to familiar with automatic transmissions, every jeep ive owned has been a stick, any information will be helpful, thanks in advance

Your Neutral Safety Switch is contaminated. I'm willing to bet it will start handily in Neutral, but you mention you have to wiggle the shifter in Park (classic symptoms.)
Search up "NSS" or "Neutral Safety Switch" here, and you'll find what you need to know. The switch may be dismounted, cleaned, and refit handily with common tools, and it usually takes an hour or so to finish the job (I've got it knocked down to rather less, but I've done a few of these...)
Yes, I'm telling you to search - but at least I'm also telling you what to search for. I just see no reason to "reinvent the wheel" - I know it's been covered several times, because I've covered it myself on four or five different boards at least once...
Your answer is out there - I've just made it much easier by telling you what you're looking for, so you don't have to guess anymore.
