so my xfer case output shaft had a leak. I changed the seal and verified the shaft is not damaged. the shaft also will not move any direction eluding to worm bearings / bushing etc.
next day it is still leaking. so I changed the seal again, rechecked everything.
still leaks.
so I removed the vent tube. it is completely blocked. I cleaned the black valve or whatever on the top of the tube. I can blow air through it now, but not very easily.
my questions are:
will a non functional vent tube cause a leak at the output shaft? seems to me it would
how easily should air pass through the black piece? seems to me it should be a lot less restrictive than what it is.
thanks in advance.

Yes, the case will be pressurized at operating temperature and oil will find its way out the shortest path (like a totally clogged CCV/PCV blowing oil out the dipstick tube)
What black valve? Haven't seen any check valves on these before

it's a valve or filter or something. black disc looking piece that fits in the top of the vent tube. it's difficult to blow through, even after spraying it out with brakleen.

yeah I had to replace my dif vent bc it got tangled up in the u joint. I just drilled out the disc piece. I'll post a couple pics of it when I get done. it appears to have a very fine screen inside of it.

this little guy is the one I was talkin about.

it had 90w in it, so I drained it and refilled with ATF. drove it a few and drained it then refilled it again.

It's crazy that the thing is up behind the cylinder head. Found my when I recently pull the head. Cleaned it out with brake cleaner and compressed air. Put it back on. Next time I'm at the "Auto Recycling Facility" I'm going to grab a couple of regular dif vents and use it the next time. Just didn't have one laying around.

Run a hose up to your engine bay beside the diff breather. Stick a little fuel filter on the end to keep the crap out
