WTF happened to my headliner??
Man, so i took out my headliner board, ripped off the old stuff. cleaned off anything that looked old and bumpy. i used some extra strong spray adhesive, applied the headliner to the board. reinstalled it in my cherokee and BOOM!! couldn't have been more stoked. brought it outside the garage, then it set in the not so hot northwest sun for a few hours and i came out and the FRIGGIN thing was sagging. if i had an AK at that moment, no tellin what would of happened!!
im assuming wrong glue. something to do with heat.
Please guys. with how basic this job is, help a brotha out!!

I recommend Loctite Maximum Strength Headliner Adhesive. I've used it several times and never had a sag. I know that's not helpful given your current situation but you did it once, you can do it again (and probably faster).

i'm cheap. i grabbed one for my 90 from a 98 at the scrap yard for 10 bux.
another 20 got me the separate sound bar.
i didn't want one from a 99 with the integrated sound bar, but i'm sure i would have gotten that one for 10 bux too.

sounds like the glue didn't bond the two materials together

Did you wait the 5 min allowing each coat of adhesive to dry before re-coat or sticking the two together? That's a major step some people tend to overlook. What adhesive did you use exactly?

What kind of glue did you use exactly? Did you wait long enough before applying the fabric to the board? Did you spray the glue on both the fabric and the board? Did you let it dry before installing?

Same thing just happened to me, and I used 3M Super 77. Few spots where it will sag when it's really hot outside, but I just push it back up and it sticks again lol

i work with spray adhesive all the time. i install laminate countertops. can't recall the brand i use, which is a high strength glue, much like spray 90. but yes, i did let it dry.
so my question now is....can i take it off and reuse the headliner board, and go get new material and start over, or will it fail regardless because i already used something i shouldnt have?
thanks for your replys guys

Use the 3M adhesive spray. It's what I did when I redid my headliner/visors/over head console and rear speaker bar. Cost me all of $60 for materials and what not (spray cost the most). Knock on wood 3 years later and not one inclination of any type of sagging or it not holding and I lived in California with 100+ degree weather each day in the summer.

nice job man. the glue i get from the shop, i thought would be better than 3m. it works better than 3m on counters. badly mistaken i guess for headliner.

Clean the board very well with a stiff brush and hope you can get that junk $hit off of it. Its a crap shoot if you can or not then use "ONLY headliner material and glue" to do the job with. Then hope the backing on the headliner material and the board adhere to each other. The old material you tried to use is trashed don't know how you would ever clean it and be sure about it.
You did leave the headliner on the workbench till everything had dried didn't you before being reinstalled?
JMHO and YMMV.

It is all about the " Heat " rating of the glue, all 3m spray glues are not rated the same. I checked online at manufactures specs for heat rating when I did mine. Come to find out ol' Dap weldwood contact adhesive has the same heat rating as the spendy 3m spray. I used a pre shrunk cotton fabric as my headliner for something different. You can put anything as the headliner if you have the right glue. Check out a fabric store like Joannes for headliner material or something else that floats your boat.
