wrangler gas mileage
alright .... Here's the deal , I have an xj but my stepbrothers dad has a wrangler ... He decided to give it to my brother but I have to drive it out to him in north Carolina ...I live in Chicago so my question is what kind of gas mileage can I expect to get out of the wrangler on the highway ... I know my cherokee gets around 15 city so Im hoping for around the same for the wrangler on the highway... It is a 2001 4.0 automatic wrangler ... Any info will be greatly appreciated

No experience with a Wrangler, but it stands to reason that it would be similar to an XJ if not better. Neither are the picture of aerodynamic efficiency and the Wrangler is probably lighter. I get about 20 mpg on the highway.

You didnt mention what year Wrangler... but below on the approx curb weights of each.
Curb weight:
Cherokee: 3057lbs-3386lbs
YJ Wrangler:3028
TJ Wrangler: 3438lbs-3857lbs
JK Wrangler: 3760lbs-4129lbs
Seperate body and frame weights add up... where the Cherokees unibody saves some pounds.
I believe it may bit a bit worse than your Cherokee.. though neither is very aerodynamic, the Wrangler weighs more (unless its a YJ) and the windshield strands darn near straight up providing a bit more resistance.

IIRC the city mileage you mentioned for your Cherokee is pretty close to a stock TJs highway mileage. As mentioned the TJ is heavier and is actually less aerodynamic unless it has the hard top. Then their drag coefficients are very close.

Wranglers also have a 3 speed auto with no overdrive (at least my 97 TJ has that and i didnt think they changed til 03-04?) and its mileage even though it had the 2.5 was horrible on the highway worse them my 4.0 xj, not to mention the soft-top is really loud...
i loved it, but its not made for the highway unless you have a stick with a hardtop

Well...It all depends on the Wrangler.......bigger tires will hurt it.....I owned a 95 Wrangler for almost 9 yrs....just got rid of it a month ago.....It was the 4.0 with the 5 speed.....When I bought it it had stock tires/wheels and repeatedly got 20 or better out on the highway....over the yrs I lifted it....added bigger wheels/tires (32's) and made several performance mods including cold air intake....rear locker...and I'm sure my milage dropped.....so if your Wrangler is stock it will get about the same as Xj....Oh....my Yj and Xj were within a 100 lbs of weighing the same.....3300-3400 lbs..........Scott
