I have a 98 XJ that i was driving this morning to work. I have to pull the shifter cable manually to put it into gear because it won’t work on the shifter even after I’ve tried adjusting it. So after school I come home to try to adjust it. I take the clip out and move it around a few times and didn’t get it to work with the shifter. So I gave up and was going to go back to just pushing and pulling the cable into gear. But now I can’t get it to go into drive! It only goes into reverse and neutral. I have no idea what the problem is, so if anyone knows anything that’d be great.

Is it still attached and the mount not broken down by the transmission? Can you unhook the cable at the trans and verify it's not bound up inside, and that you can move the shift lever at the trans (set the parking brake first!). It it seems jammed inside the trans, take the NSS off and make sure it's not broken inside.

The lever does move freely but it only clicks twice, all the way forward and all the way backwards. I will take the NNS off this weekend and see if there is anything wrong with it. Originally Posted by lawsoncl
