When I bought my XJ there was a sony head unit tapped into the stock wiring with the OE plug intact.

I recently bought a stock Infinity Head unit from the junk yard and it plugged in and worked instantly. Also bought the Infinity tweeters from a junk yard, plugged them in and worked... But I haven't noticed an amp or wiring for it any near my back seat.

If there is an amp, the wires from the radio would have to go to the amp then to the speakers- correct?
So it would have to have two sets of plugs?
One for direct output to the speakers and another that sent the signal to the amp AND then in the doors... would also have to have two sets of plugs, one directly from the radio and another with the amplified power from the amp.

I'm making sense???
Not completely. Picture it this way... The standard sound systems has the speakers wires going directly from the radio to the speakers. The amplified version is the exact same, but in amp is spliced into the middle of the speaker wires. The amp has speaker wire inputs, and outputs. In order to "splice" the amp into the wires, a different wire harness is used to run the wires back under the rear seat, and then back up under the dash.

so you're saying that the wires should run to the location of the amp regardless?

No, that's the difference with the "premium sound" wiring harness, there's extra wires that run back to the amp that are not present on the regular harness. I was trying to explain more from a wiring diagram point of view though. On the regular system the speaker wires go from the radio to each individual speaker directly. On the premium system the same speaker wires go from the radio to the amp, and THEN to the speakers. The connections on the radio are the same, it's just a different harness between the radio and speakers. You follow?
