I think that is a myth, I'm searching for that thread right now. I just got back from a JY with a ZJ alt to find out it is IDENTACLE to the stock XJ alt. right down to the part number. further more I searched at autozone only to find the alts are the same there also. OEM alt is 90amp, if you buy an upgraded alt you can choose from 120-136amp for $100.00 more. as far as wiring them up no worries there because they are the same!!!

P.S. if someone comes back and says "it has to be the V-8 ZJ" sorry I looked at that also and once again... same part #

You need the V8 alt from a 97 or 98 Grand, or any of the others listed in this link:

I've done the swap and very glad I did.

ok I looked closer and the V-8 does have a different part # but it's still rated at only 90 amps. yes you can get an upgraded alt... But do a heck of alot more research then I did and look for the specific part number other then just a certain year ZJ. I read too many threads saying "ZJ alt. upgrade" without specifically clarifying which part number to look for.

I was ticked off at the time when I posted earlier in this thread, but I wish I had done my homework before heading off to the bone yard. just trying to save someone else from making the same mistake.
