Default Wiring gas tank question

OK, old tank had a hole so I grabed my spare out of an 86 xj.

old

new


3 wire old and 2 wire new. Ideas ? one is ground im sure, 2 wire new one is brown larger and black smaller, 3 wire is red black and orange.

2 different years aye?... hmm looks like you gotta find out what the red and orange do.. hopefully someone will chime in

can't you just swap the sending unit over?

Did the '86 tank come out of a carbed Jeep? That would explain the wiring differences. No in-tank fuel pump. I'm just guessing here. Two wires are for fuel gauge signal and ground. Three wires are for fuel gauge signal, fuel pump power, and ground. JMO

ol"blue looks like your right on, i feel dumb after posting. Carbed to FI. One FP from the carbed tank but the FI tank had an in tank pump either the low or high presure pump.

Anyhow I'm going to see if they can switch over (i.e. same sized holes)
