Just bought this Jeep and the previous owner said it overheated while driving in town. While replacing all the hoses, radiator, water pump, thermostat housing, thermostat and replaced a leaking power steering pump, I found this stub wrapped in electrical tape coming out of the fire wall. Unwrapped only to find this mess. What kind of trouble am I looking at ?

edit: signature does not show evidently when viewing from a phone. It’s a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Limited, 4.0

If I'm seeing that correctly, that's the main wiring harness! But how is that Jeep running???

Let's hope that Cruiser sees this and comments.

Meanwhile, you might find some useful info at his web site.

Was the Jeep ever a police or other "official" vehicle?
That's a lot of wires!

Funny enough, the only electrical problem I'm having is no running lights in the tail lights.

No...not that I'm aware of.

If that were a newer XJ, my guess would be the wiring for an automatic (nss and shift solenoids), that was cut out for a manual swap. I dont know how the wiring is routed for that on the older ones tho. With that said, is it an auto or stick?

Auto...surprisingly, the Jeep runs. I took for a test drive prior to buying it.

If Cruiser54 doesn't jump in tonight, maybe PM him tomorrow. He will know for sure if that is original and if so, what it is and probably why someone might modify it.

My thoughts exactly. Harness replaced and old one just cut out.

Ok...I do see a black and gray connector as you show in the pictures. So, I’m good and don’t have anything to worry about?

I would feel WAY more comfortable were that my Jeep, and I saw the ends of that cut off harness.

Check inside for a matching bunch of cut off wires.
