Default Windshield Defrost messed up

I am having problems with my windshield defroster, which I need because I live in Alaska. I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee. The heater works fine, but when I turn it to the defrost setting, I hear a clicky noise, and the air stops coming out of the windshield defrost vents. It instead comes out of the side vents near the windows. Heat will come out of the defrost vent if I leave the heater on a setting that blows at your face, but if I turn the power up to 3 or 4, I get that clicky noise again and the vent is blocked. Is there a fix that I can do myself? I don't want to spend too much money on this because I'm trying to sell my Jeep. Thanks!

I had a similar problem last year. There is a cable that runs under the dash and above the passengers feet. Kind of below the glove box vicinity. This cable had gotten twisted or kinked somehow. When I realligned it the vents started working properly again as according to the position I had selected on the panel.
