Default Windows started working again.

Ok, so back in February I bought my first vehicle, a 1997 Cherokee Country. Both rear windows never worked. The switches on the drivers door, nor the individual switches worked. When the switches on the driver door were operated, the interior lights would dim, and the motors would "click." I've taken the door panels off, no wires were broken. Being not a serious problem, I kept putting off looking farther into the problem.

Well, two days ago, for no reason, and with me doing nothing to solve the problem for the last two months, the windows started working again. The motors seem to power the windows very strongly, which rules out a fuse or the motors. The only thing thats weird, is that the passenger side window does not operate with the drivers side door open. Which seems to pinpoint the location of the problem, to the wires running into the drivers door.

I'm scared that the windows will again quit working at a bad time, with the windows down. So what do you guys think the problem is, and a possible fix?

It sounds like you have broken wires in the door jamb rubber boot. That's were I would start looking be for the short everything out.
BTW. it is a common place for the wires to break.

So I should just pull the boot back and look for wires that are broke, and just splice them back together?

It might be easier to pull the door panel too and just fish a new wire through if necessary. Inside the flex boot is a bad place for a splice.

Ok cool, Thanks. I'll check it out today. Gotta do some work on the XJ anyway.
