Default Will a high output motor work in a non high output motor cherokee?

A friend of mine found a 1993cherokee country that someone tried to get running by putting a high output motor in it. They could never get it running and gave up on it. Will that not work or do you have to change something else. It is a beautiful jeep and it is really cheap. Is it possible to fix with that motor or does it need to be a non high output 4.0? Thank you.
