Will a 98 TCU/TCM work in a 97 ?

They are physically different, but the Plugs are the same.
The Dealer says that the 97 TCU is discontinued

And the Auto parts stores say dealer only item

Or
TCM = Transmission Control Modual

Dealers call it TCM
Manual calls it TCU
