I always look up part #'s & see if they match. Not always the case but a good start.

I'm gonna guess they interchange.

they interchange. I have rarely seen anyone do it. But the mounts should be the same. only diffrence in the body style is the more round look on our xjs

It should bolt right on, but it won't look right. Like red said it's a different style, might not line up as well.

The mounts are not the same just to let you know.

Take the 97 mounts with the 97 bumper and it will bolt right on. But if you try an use the 97 bumper and the 92 mounts it won't work. Ask how I know.

The only big difference in the bumpers themselves is the 97+ are shorter because the end. Caps wrapped around more.

I've not laid them side by side but I thought they were pretty close in appearance.

The bumper or the brackets? They both look pretty similar but you'll see that the mounting locations to the bumper on the brackets are different. And like I said the only difference in the new bumpers over the old would be the new ones are a tad shorter. Not that much of a difference at all really. But the mounts are not interchangeable. If you want to use a 87-96 bumper on a 97-01 you need the 87-96 brackets. And vise versa
