Default Why is my fuel guage not working??

I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Approx. 2 months ago I removed the fuel tank and replaced the fuel filter. The tank was about a quarter full, and the fuel gauge read correctly. I then filled the tank, and the gauge read full. As I drove the car over the next week or so, the gauge gradually dropped to just below half a tank and stopped there. It would not go lower and would not read higher when I filled the tank again. It was stuck there. I assumed the float was hitting the wall of the tank, and I did not feel like removing the tank again, so I let it go. A month or so later I disconnected the battery while doing another project on the car. When I reconnected the battery I saw that the fuel gauge needle has dropped down below the empty mark, and it will not move from there. So, what's the problem? Is there any way to trouble shoot this? How do I proceed to figure out how to fix this? Thanks!

It sounds like when you where in there you may have bent something just enough to cause it to stick one the fuel level went down low enough.

I just ran the self test for the gauges (hold in the odometer reset button and turn the key to the run position, then release the button). All the gauges test fine.

If I had bent something that might explain the gauge initially sticking at just below half full, but does not explain why the gauge dropped down to below the empty mark when I disconnected the battery.

May be that the sending unit died.

possibly the ground wire at the sending unit.

When I replaced the fuel pump I saw the wire connector that attaches to the top of the fuel pump module and two wires that connected to the sending unit down inside the fuel pump module. I reconnected all of those. Where exactly is the ground wire? Is it one of the two wires I connected to the sending unit? What do i do to determine if the ground wire is the problem? Remove the fuel tank and fuel pump module again? Thanks.
