I have Aussie Lockers front and rear in my XJ. I love them and never have problems with them on the road...including snow and ice conditions. I always keep it at a proper speed for the given conditions and just pull the dummies out of the ditch as I find them along the road...
About the OP,I have no experience with lockers but I would think if your vehicle is a dd wouldn't it be better to have a manually selectable locker? Is there such a thing?

just let off the gas around corners and you will be fine. Its just when you have an auto locker and apply torque to the axle that it locks up which in turn causes you to loose traction on ice. In the snow though lockers are way better especially off road.

I dont off road really but I think I would not mind a manual locker just for the winter months in case of getting stuck or for the need of a bit of extra bite when needed.
I mean with the manual ones you can be sure that it will not engage while you are doing your daily driving but engage it when needed, seems like the best of both worlds to me personally
