What causes most XJ's to sound like they're running diesel engines?? I know about the Jeep tick (the rocker arms I believe is the culprit of that), but what is it that makes them sound like diesel engines? Mine does it, my friends does it, everyone I have met with an XJ does this. No issues with it, Im just curious.

I think these inhale a ton of air and the cats are a little loud also. There isnt much sound proofing either so the engine is amplified in the cabin also.

lol, I mean dont get me wrong, I love it. I am planning on gettin a Summit Turbo Muffler to make it seem louder, but I just always wondered what exactly it was. So its just the sound of engine operation?
Jeep engines sound like cummins engines, just not as low pitched:

Kind of a resemblance

No, its just cause Most industrial diesels are I6, just like the 4.0 and use a single exit manifold, also just like the 4.0.
Mine doesnt sound like a diesel either, all I hear is "KNOCKKNOCKKNOCKKNOCKKNOCK CLACKCLACKCLACKCLACK"

Because Jeeps only wish they ran off of compression rather than ignition...sigh....No I'm just kidding. Mine doesn't sound like a diesel...maybe it's because it doesn't have enough miles...All I have is a noisy lifter...

I thought it was odd, you mentioned split headers. They used to make them, for the old Dodge slat six. They sounded great. I've checked the interned, for over a year now. And can't find any company that offers them. Especially for the I-6. "Tri-Flow" was one brand name, I remember. I always wondered, why no one tried them on the XJ. Or mention of them. I guess I'm just dating myself!

They used to have all sorts of split header options availible back when a inline was more common than a v8, some were 3&3, some were 4&2 which sound real cool. since my 01 comes with split manifolds, when I get some more cashflow, I know a exaust shop who did my exaust for my other vehicles do this jeep. I plan on 1-7/8 to 2" but no larger for backpressure, but the only thing I am unsure of is if I should run a crossover pipe since the exaust only draws from one head as opposed to two on a v or h block. Soon as I get it done, I will post pics and video so everyone knows what it sounds like
