With MINOR triming you can fit 31's or whatever they are on a 16inch rim...

Input a tire size the calculator will display the diameter, you can also compare two different sizes.

A 31" tire on a 16" wheel is still a 31"!!! lol I'd recommend going with 15" rims asap, cause you'll find more often than not the tires will be cheaper! never understood why more rubber means less money, but what eve...

I have a stock 96 XJ and just put 245/75R16's on Rubicon Moab rims. The rear rubs a tiny bit with passengers. They also rub in the front at about 3/4 turn, then goes away at full lock. Wheeling it would not be a good thing with these tires at stock lift imo. Plus you have over a half inch of height than mine w/ the 255's. I'm also installing a 2" budget add a leaf kit for now, but will get a 3 1/2" spring pack kit in a couple of months when I can afford to do it right. Hope this helps!

The 15s will fit. Bolt pattern is the same. Stock tire size on the 16" wheels the ZJs come with are 225-70/16. I own one and personaly at stock height I don't think a 255-75/16 will fit without rubbing. I know with a 2" BB you can fit 265-70/16s (measures out to be a 30.6" tire) with some trimming to the front bumper cover and also cutting and bending the pinch seam over in the front wheel wells.
I have a 2.5" BB with a set of Up Country Springs and I am sitting at about 3.5-4" of lift. I am saving up for a set of 265/75-16s. They fit with minor rub on front bumper but that will be taken care of when I build a bumper this summer. 265/75R16 tire is 31.6".
As far as axles being the same, if you have the V8 ZJ they are not the same rear axle. It will be the D44a. Aluminum housing dana 44.

With a 2" spacer kit they will fit with a little rubbing. Mainly the areas I stated.

That is the kit I am running but I kept my stock coil spring Isolators on to give me about 1/2" more lift. On top of that I replaced my springs with a set of factory Up Country Springs to give me about another inch or so of lift. In total I have right around 3.5-4" of lift.
