When I did mine I left the TC in the Jeep. It was the way to go if you ask me... Directions sucked but what else is new...
You need a large pair of Lock Ring pliers... I bought a pair at the auto store and they weren't quite large enough, but I stuck a spacer in the jaws and made them work.
You should be ok if your patient and have decent tools.

i used two small flat headed screw drivers to get my snap rings off and on,
but make sure you have an angle grinder that out put shaft for the vacum switch on the transfer case sawzall wouldn't even touch it ruined two blades
it's easier to pull the transfer case and work on it on a bench with good light and little patience

you are looking at about 2+ hours. jack it up and disconnect both drive shafts. make sure it is high enough to comfortably work underneath because until you get the cover off of the transfer case you will be there for a bit. the top bolt is a PITA.

ya top bolts really suck also there is one behind a braket or gaurd on the driver side if i rember right. first time took me about six hrs. total. this last time took about two hrs. ( first time didn't seal good) make sure to seal it with the black rtv one for high oil resistance.

Oh I guess it was around 4 hours. I take my time and clean everything up when I work though. Not sure what that guy was talking about grinding the vac switch off for. You shouldn't have that on yours...
He gets the MacGuiver award for getting the large snap ring off with screwdrivers... I remember old posts where guys tried that to no avail and finally broke down and spent the $16 on the right tool.

i had to cut the shaft which ingages the vacume switch to lock the posi on the front axles on mine because mine is an 88 with the vacume dana 30 front. but with the new models you don't have to. that is my mistake i appoligize about that.

I still say you get the MacGuiver award for getting that snap ring off with screwdrivers! My hats off to ya'... There must have been some blood involved with that somewhere!
Sounds like the original poster is doing his on a lift so I imagine he'll have lots of nice tools at his beckon calling... He'll be fine...
Just don't forget to put the magnet back in at the end of the task! I almost did that!

Your first SYE... pull it and do it on a workbench.

You dont have to remove the trans.

I did mine this Saturday. I took out the T case, only 6 bolts, and you can slide it out and lower it down to your chest with no problem providing you have the room. About 45-50 pounds. It can also be done easily without removing it. Good snap ring pliers make the job much better. About 4 hrs. Good Luck
