Today I did a little wheeling that consisted of a good amount of water and a silt/sand mixture. I noticed that there is now a faint whirring sound coming from what I think is the transfer case. It literally sounds like the electric fan kicks on, but quieter. I did not beat on it or gas it real hard or anything during the trip, just some slow crawls. Should I be worried about this?

When do you hear this sound? Is something hanging or dragging against your driveshaft?
I'm gonna take more of a look at it today. It might be something stuck in there. How would I go about checking the fluid?

On the back of the TCase there will be two plugs, an upper one and a lower one. Make sure you're on a level(ish) surface and remove the upper plug. The fluid level inside should come up to the bottom of that hole.
Also, try to see if you got water in the case by looking at the oil inside. It'll have milky white spots in it if you did.

Yeah, I found the filler hole. I wasn't sure on which bolt/giant screw thing it was so I asked my dad to check it out since he did it years ago. I'll go check it to see what's up. Hopefully there isn't water in the case, cuz that would suck.

If there was just do a drain and refill on the fluid. It couldn't have been in there for more than half a day and whatever miles you put on it. You'll be alright.
No water, no milkyness. Just a little low on fluid and it was kinda brownish. I tried to fill it up, but it just pours right out. I wasted about a quarter of a quart of dex/merc III trying it, then I gave up since I'm not gonna waste more and it's not too low. I got a little more in there, but I could still use some. I need to pump it in somehow. It hits the threads of the opening and pours right back out. Even with a funnel it pours out. It even pored out of the funnel where I was pouring it in
