Default Whining at rear after driving in heavy rain.

1989 XJ Pioneer 4.0 auto 4x4

Went driving tonight at it was flooding and hit a stretch of highway and hydroplaned to the max. I couldn't see for almost 10 seconds and nearly wrecked.

Once I got to town I noticed a whining sound coming from rear. It still did it when I got home. It does it worst when I'm sitting still. Jeep still seems to run and drive fine.

I'm thinking water has something to do with it but who knows. Any ideas.

If it is worst when sitting still it should be easy to find. Put it in park and take a walk around. Not too many things in back that make noise when stopped, fuel pump being one of them..

Differential could have a lot of water in the lube and can hear the gears.

X2 on the diff getting soaked. I think I'd start with a fluid change. Can't hurt anyway and should be done every so often. Why not now?

Can't imagine a bearing suddenly going out due to water...
Are the ujoints greaseable?

It does it worst when I'm sitting still.
If that's the case it would pretty much rule out the differential, bearings, u-joints...the drivetrain isn't moving.

Then it would have be either the engine, trans or transfer case as those are all that would be turning when stopped. Going to have get under it and start checking those things nothing in the rear turning while at a stop.

Yeah it could be your exhaust that's making a whining type noise, mine almost sort of whistles just because it's old and a pos haha

That whining noise is actually because you probably have Jeep's 'Marco Rubiocon' edition.
