I'm not sure this is a good idea, or if it would even run without the belt...I think your best bet is to simply tighten your belt a good bit and see if that helps it any. If not, then you have an accessory issue such as power steering or maybe your alternator even.

as long as you don't run it long enough to reach operating temp you will be fine. Battery power is sufficient to run the car there's no reason u can't. Its a very quick diagnostic procedure

I added some power steering fluid and the whine is still there. When you turn the wheel either left or right it has some noise but none of a belt slip. The engine light came on so who knows what it really is now.

I had the same problem on my 88 MJ. It sounded exactly like the power steering pump. I added fluid and even added an additive to the oil and no luck. I was about tho replace the pump when my*battery*light came on. I replaced the alternator and no more wore whine.

What was weird was that the same day the whine started on my way home from work the voltage of the gauge dropped to 9. Got home parked it and started it again and it went back up to 13. I put a brand new alternator from Oreillys on March.

x2 it's fine. Highly recommended. Keep in mind that you aren't spinning the alternator or water pump.

Turn all of the pulleys by hand and listen for anomalies. Alternatively get a piece of hose and put it up to your ear, use it to listen around the engine bay like a stethescope. Beats random guesses from Internet people who aren't in front of your Jeep

Same thing happened to me. One night voltage dropped and battery light came on next day charging normal but still had the whine. New alt and good to go. I would take that alt back to O'Reilly.

Thanks, I guess it won't hurt getting a warranty exchange and hopefully that will take care of the annoying whine.
