My 87 Wagoneer just died on me. I backed out of the drive and took off like normal then it died about 30 seconds later. Just died. No sputter or backfire at all, just dead. I tried restarting it several times with no luck. I walked back home, luckily I hadn't made it far. I came back about a half hour later and it started right up. I drove it around for a while and came back home. I let it Idle for a while and it died again. Same thing as before. No sputter or anything just instantly dead.

So my question is where do I start testing on this thing? I'm thinking maybe Crankshaft Position Sensor. I thought maybe fuel pump because it's been giving me problems on long drives when it gets hot. If i press in the valve on the fuel line it sprays with plenty of pressure so I don't think that's the problem. What do you guys think?

 

Your describing the typical failure of the CPS (Crank Position Sensor) its on the top left side of the bell housing.

 

I guess I'll start there then. Still trying to find my analog volt meter. I read that some times they test good but still fail until replaced. Anyone have this experience?
