This should be a law you need one before the purchase of an xj or any other vehicle.

An even better investment is a year specific Factory Service Manual. I paid $90.00 and change to the dealer who ordered it in.

Smile Thanks everyone

I just joined.
I was watching a video on YouTube on how to replace a crankshaft sensor on a 2001. And found out the distributor on my 98 was not on my daughters 2001
Now I have to check my sons 1999
Guess I better get a manual for my daughters 01' never saw a setup like this before.

The '99 will have a distributor.

They went over to a coil rail waste spark system (not "coil on plug" as suggested above) for 2000 and 2001. The coil rail has three coils on it, each of which fires two cylinders at the same time, twice in each cycle. It actually fires on the power stroke AND on the exhaust stroke to burn out unspent fuel. Despite the whining you'll often see about it, it's actually a very good system that gives you a good hot spark. People just don't like the "set it and forget it" nature of the thing, where you don't have a lot of extra parts to tinker with.

It's a good idea to get a real factory service manual specific to the year you're working on, especially when it comes to the '00 and '01 because of all the weird stuff they did in the last couple of years. There's a link on the first page of this thread that may have some free downloads. You can buy searchable PDFs of the genuine FSM from Pacific Coast Manuals for $8 each. You can get hard copies off ebay for anywhere from $50 to $100. Whatever you do, don't try to rely on Haynes or Chiltons manuals, because those are written for a range of years and are usually wrong for whatever you need it for at any given moment.

my money is on the crank sensor. i've replaced 5 to every 1 of the cam sensor.
but in all honesty, it wouldn't hurt to replace both
