When I change my manifold gasket, should I just get a new header?
My jeep has a bad puttering sound from the exhaust. I figured it was just the manifold gasket but after researching and asking I find out the the exhaust headers crack alot.
It also needs motor mounts which are on the way and I heard that having bad motor mounts cracks the header even more.
I only want to do this once and don't want to get in there to replace the gasket and find the header cracked.
How likely is it that it is cracked? Its probably the original, 240,000 miles on the jeep.
I was looking at this on ebay and it comes with the gaskets which are 20 bucks each so the headers really only $119.
But I dont want so spend the money and find mines perfectly fine and it was just the gaskets... Ahh I don't know what to do... It also says that that header will add 10-15 HP, is that really true?
Thanks

maybe the combination of bored out tb, a good cold air intake, header, high flow cat, neon injectors and a flowmaster muffler might give you 15hp. all of those gain 10hp, 20hp deals are based on the best reported results under controlled environments and other power adders. and those headers look just like the OEM with short runners. i bought my headers at www.ineedparts.com and it was $160.00 shipped to my door. i'm putting it on today.

yeah I figured that 10hp was bs from just headers, I do have a flowmaster muffler and am planning on putting on a cold are intake, could get some injectors too :P
Anyways hp isnt my concern right now I just want the exhaust leak noise gone noise gone. Anyway to test or find out if my headers are cracked before taking it all apart?
Oh and I looked up the header for mine at that site and it says $208 with shipping :S

suck some seafoam down your brake booster vacuum hose, and pull the throttle open. it's gonna smoke, and if you can see the smoke under your hood, then either your manifold is cracked or your gasket is leaking. i think that's about all you can do. btw, are you sure you looked up the right part? because, mine was $139.99 before shipping.

In theory, the one in the link will work, but you either have to: a)Get rid of the EGR system b) have a bung welded in to connect the egr tube to the header.

eBay manifolds for just about any vehicle out there are notorious for being steaming piles of poo, especially if they claim to make any sort of performance gain, or seem exceptionally cheap. Horrible welds, poor finishes...you're better off going with a header from a reputable dealer than some no-name on eBay. It may cost you more initially, but it's not going to crack or warp like some of the turds you get off eBay would.
