So your wheels are not flying off while driving.

Get longer studs and new lugnuts, torque them properly and check them frequently.

confused, the car came factory with aluminum wheels, granted this was years before the various paint jobs however, maybe its a simple lug swap for different lugs?

The wheel pictured is the wheel that fell off. Lugs were borrowed off the other wheels to put back on

I only drove it home with 3. And now its parked...till I find out something safe

No, they were. The one wheel flew across to the opposite side of traffic on that shoulder. A 31x10.5 shooting out from under a car is scary and lucky no one got hurt. But I see most people running steel wheels.

It didn't come from the factory with THOSE wheels.. From the pic you can plainly see the studs are to short. They should be sticking out of the wheel 3/4" to 1" beyond the face of the mount hole. Those are barely extended 1/2", looks more like 3/8. You are lucky you haven't Killed someone yet.

+1. I felt they were short, but not too short. The first time on my other XJ I assumed I must've left them too loose. So now I always check torque on lugs.

but when it happened a second time, I knew something was wrong. More people should know about this. I feel like everyone has wheels and tires on a XJ anyway, I'll start looking at new studs.
