Default Whats in your tool box?

It might just be me, but I carry a tool box in my Jeep that I can basically do what ever I need to fix my Jeep, the problem is its a full size tool box 26 inches and weighs and easy 60 pounds. Im looking to reduce my tools in my Jeep and wondering what you guys carry. In a smaller tool box like a 14 inch or so.

Things I know I want: Zip ties, duct tape, fuses, wrenches, pliers and vice grips.

If you carry your ratchet/sockets what sizes do you carry?

I carry a 130 lb toolbox that's loaded with enough tools to take apart a car then put back together. Not just xj specific tools because sometimes friends break down and they might need help. And it's helpful when I head out to the junkyards and I got what I need to get the part I need.

There's a member here that swear by this quote, "I would rather to have it and not need it, instead of not having it and needing it" well not sure on exact wording but u get the gist of it. Lol

I don't carry a tool box. I fix everything foreseeable before I go out. And keep up with my maintenance.

Just having tools with you, and no parts, doesn't seen to help very much IMO.

Credit card and Hagerty towing card. I'd rather fix things in my heated garage.
Because Firestorm is right. I used to carry a couple hundred# of tools around for work, it's the parts that are the problem.

For an XJ specific tool box this guy has a good idea of what you will need. Has a tool for everything and a location for it.

I should say the reason I want a smaller tool box, I'm going doorless. Where I live I don't worry about crime. I don't worry about forgetting my keys in the Jeep overnight. But if for some reason my tools did get stolen it's cheaper to replace a small tool box than my $600 in tools.

I've gone to a strategy of separating stuff into bags for compartmentalization, then take the bags I need where I'm going. All my cars have a basic tool bag that can repair or remove basic stuff (wrenches and 3/8" sockets, screwdrivers, wire strippers, fuses, etc), and an emergency bag for if I get stuck somewhere (first aid kit, blanket, water purifier, and so forth). I have other bags for automotive specialty tools (pullers, separators, clamps, etc), expedition parts (spare shafts, u-joints, etc), camping gear, and so forth, that I grab depending on where I'm going.

I consider this oem because there's nothing too out of the ordinary with my Jeep. Also if it was in modified I figured I'd get more answers like driveshafts and other parts, the only spare things I really carry are fuses and my tire. I'm just looking for basic tools. If it's too much of a job I'd just call AAA then fix it when I get home.

Lets forget about driveshafts and what not for a moment and approach this in a entirely different direction:
A.
OEM Cherokee Tech
All OEM related XJ Tech. Examples, no start, general maintenance or anything that's stock.
B.
Modified Cherokee Tech
All modified tech questions. If it modifies your XJ beyond stock parts ask it here.
C.
Cherokee Chat
General non-tech Cherokee chat
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, out of these three choices, what section should the contents of your tool box be properly posted in?

I can see it fit in any. General Maintenance, as sometime electrical sensors die and you have to replace them, sometimes at bad times. Modified, as you're adding tools to the Jeep. General talk, as it's not talking about hard modifications to the Jeep.

I see where you're coming from but I see it working in any of them.

And E Hall. I like that mode of thinking. I think I'll go for that.

Yeah, that'd be me, LOL

When I pack my tools, I have a kit that has 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" drive sockets, with 6 and 12 point sockets, in both shallow and deep. The kit also includes some screwdrivers, dikes, needlenose pliers, regular pliers, and common combo wrench sizes in SAE and metric, torx drivers, allen sockets and wrenches, and just about any fitting or conversion you could want or need. Harbor Freight mechanic's tool kit. Works great for about 95% of what you'll need to do. I also have another box with a full set of combo wrenches, SAE and metric, and recently aquired some flexing, locking, and ratcheting box end wrenches, and also put a hammer, dead blow mallet, breaker bar, pry bars, screwdriver kit, channel locks of varying sizes, and vise-grips of various sizes in both regular and needlenose...as well as some other miscellaneous things, scraper, loctite red and blue, flashlight, baling wire, things of that nature. Also carry a full electrical repair kit, tire repair kit, fuses, hose clamps, etc...I do not carry the majority of this on a daily basis, as I have AAA, but when I hit the trail, or have a longer trip planned, I take it all. Basically, just think of it like this: If you use it in your driveway, you'll need it on the trail. My two Lincolns.

I also carry simple things like belt, hoses, u-joints and such, as well as fluids. You are correct. When I upgrade axle shafts, the old ones are going in the back as spares, LOL
